There is a dangerous narrative gaining traction in some circles: that paedophilia is simply a “mental health condition” deserving of sympathy, understanding, and treatment rather than condemnation.

This is wrong.

Paedophilia, a sexual attraction to children is not an illness like depression or schizophrenia. It is a profound moral and behavioural failure that, when acted upon, causes devastating, lifelong harm to innocent children. Framing it as a mental health issue risks shifting focus away from the victims and softening society’s response to predators.

The Reality We Must Face

Child sexual abuse is not a misunderstanding or a symptom of untreated illness. It is a deliberate violation of the most vulnerable members of society. In England and Wales alone, over 101,000 child sexual abuse offences were recorded in 2023/24. Behind every statistic is a child whose innocence, trust, and future have been stolen.

Survivors often carry the trauma for life, facing increased risks of depression, anxiety, PTSD, self-harm, and difficulties forming healthy relationships. No compassionate society should prioritise “understanding” the abuser over protecting the child.

Why the “Mental Health” Excuse is Dangerous

Calling paedophilia a mental health condition:

Creates false sympathy for offenders

Weakens public resolve for strong sentencing.

Encourages the idea that predators are “sick” rather than responsible for their actions.

Puts children at greater risk by softening the justice system’s response.

We must be clear: having harmful urges does not excuse acting on them. Many people struggle with unwanted thoughts or impulses and choose not to harm others. Choosing to groom, abuse, or exploit a child is a moral choice not an uncontrollable disease.

What Real Justice Looks Like

At Protect Our Children UK, we reject any narrative that excuses or minimises these crimes. We demand:

Mandatory minimum sentences that reflect the lifelong harm caused to victims.

No early release or automatic parole for those convicted of sexual offences against children.

Life without parole for the most serious cases involving grooming, repeated abuse, or multiple victims.

Our children cannot protect themselves. The justice system must protect them with clear, firm consequences not therapy sessions and second chances for predators.

Stand With Us

Paedophilia is not a mental health condition to be treated with compassion. It is a threat to our children that must be met with zero tolerance and uncompromising justice.
