As parents, grandparents, and concerned citizens across the UK, we all share the same deep fear that a predator might target our children. Yet every day, the justice system seems to let us down.
In 2023/24, police forces in England and Wales recorded 101,199 child sexual abuse offences. That is more than 277 offences every single day. Behind these shocking numbers are real children whose lives have been shattered by grooming, abuse, and exploitation.
As of the latest detailed figures from June 2023, more than 9,000 people were serving custodial sentences specifically for sexual offences against children. Despite this scale, far too many offenders still receive relatively short sentences, early release on parole, or even suspended terms. This soft approach fails victims and leaves more children at risk.
The harm caused by these crimes is profound and often lifelong. Survivors frequently face increased risks of depression, anxiety, PTSD, self-harm, and difficulties in forming trusting relationships. No child should have to carry such trauma because the punishment for their abuser was too lenient.
That is why Protect Our Children UK has launched a petition calling for urgent change. We are demanding real justice, not the weak responses we see too often.
Our clear demands are:
Mandatory minimum sentences that properly reflect the lifelong harm inflicted on child victims
No early release or automatic parole for those convicted of sexual offences against children, especially in aggravated or repeat cases
Life sentences without the possibility of parole for the most serious offences, including grooming, repeated abuse, or cases involving multiple victims
An end to overly lenient plea deals and suspended sentences that undermine public confidence
Faster court processes and stronger support for victims and their families throughout the justice system
Our children cannot protect themselves. It falls to us as adults, as a society, and as a nation to ensure the law puts their safety first.
Soft justice is no justice at all when innocent lives are at stake. Stricter, certain sentences are not about revenge; they are about deterrence, accountability, and prevention.
If you agree that our children deserve better, please sign the petition today and share it with your friends, family, and community. Every signature adds pressure on MPs and policymakers to act.
Together, we can build a safer Britain where predators fear the full force of the law and our children can grow up protected.
